Converting 54 Caliber Muzzleloaders Using Conversion Kits

Converting your .54 Cal Ignition System? In this post we talk about Converting 54 Caliber Muzzleloaders Using Conversion Kits.

We get a lot of questions from folks who own a .54 caliber Knight that has the #11 or musket cap ignition system but would like to convert to the FPJ 209 ignition system. Knight offers these in the form of a Conversion KitThe biggest issue the they have is knowing if their muzzleloader has a single slotted breech plug. Sometimes they actually have a double slotted one.

It can get confusing sometimes, so we wrote a little article to hopefully help alleviate the confusion and get you on the right track to converting the ignition system in  your Knight muzzleloader.

Converting 54 Caliber Muzzleloaders Using Conversion Kits – which kit do you need?

By looking at your breech plug you can determine which conversion kit you will need. If you have a .54 cal single slot breech plug then you will need to purchase the 603 Conversion Kit (M900603). If your .54 cal breech plug has a double slot then you will need to purchase the 604 Conversion Kit (M900604). Once you figure out which breech plug you have, you can order your kit and start the conversion.

Feel free to contact customer service if you are having trouble verifying how many slots your breech plug has, or simply refer to the illustration below:

How to switch out your ignition system:

Once you have figured out which breech plug you have, you can order your conversion kit and start the conversion of your ignition system!

The first step in Converting 54 Caliber Muzzleloaders Using Conversion Kits is to remove the barrel from the stock using a size 5/32 allen wrench in the stock screw, then you can remove the plunger hammer assembly by unscrewing it counter-clockwise with your hand. Once it has been removed, use the combo tool to remove the old breech plug from the barrel. Before placing the new breech plug into the barrel you need to apply breech plug grease.

IMPORTANT! NEVER REPLACE THE BREECH PLUG IN YOUR MUZZLELOADER WITHOUT APPLYING A LIBERAL AMOUNT OF GREASE TO THE THREADS!

After the new breech plug has been greased and inserted, you may now install the new hammer assembly that came with your conversion kit. Place the barrel assembly back onto the stock and screw the stock screw back in place.
